      The United States is one of the major export markets for Chinese tableware, cooking utensils and related food contact articles. Under the regulatory framework of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), food contact substances are generally managed according to their intended use and regulatory authorization status. For food contact substances falling under the scope of food additive regulation, compliance is usually based on relevant food additive regulations in the Code of Federal Regulations Title 21 (21 CFR), Food Contact Notifications (FCN), as well as other applicable exemption or authorization routes. Parts 174 to 179 of 21 CFR specify usage requirements for many types of indirect food additives in food contact materials, including adhesives, coatings, paper and paperboard, polymers, rubber products and related additives. Relevant regulations generally specify substance identity, scope of application, usage conditions or restrictions. For specific products such as ceramics and silver-plated ware, the FDA also regulates risks of lead, cadmium and other hazardous substances through Compliance Policy Guides (CPG) and other documents.
